A \u201cferocious easterly wind\u201d that blew at the Red Sea all night (Exodus 14:21) caused \u201cthe flow to stand as still as a column\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ned<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and the Jordan\u2019s waters, too, \u201cstood as still as a column\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ned<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) (3:16).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interruptions, however, were initiated in dissimilar manners. While Moses (simply?) raised his arm and waved his staff, Joshua was instructed to send the priests bearing the Ark out into the Jordan. Only when \u201c[their] feet are immersed in the water\u201d (verse 15) at the eastern bank of the river, did the waters stand still.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This distinction is somewhat reminiscent of a Midrash that credits Nahshon ben Aminadav with effecting the crossing of the Red Sea by being the first (and only?) person willing to risk entering it on the sole strength of God\u2019s assurance that it would split. Here, too, the priests had to immerse their own feet in the Jordan as a sign of their commitment to act solely on the strength of God\u2019s command.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as the staff was to Moses a tangible reminder that he acted at God\u2019s behest, so had the Ark become, to the priests, the symbol of their dedication.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
