The Torah of Moses, one of the traditional names for the Pentateuch, fittingly closes with a paean to the unparalleled prophet and leader of the Israelites.<\/span><\/p>\n

Never again did there arise in Israel a prophet like Moses\u2014whom the LORD singled out, face to face (Deut. 34:10).<\/span><\/p>\n

The uniqueness of Moses and Mosaic prophecy is a basic tenant of Jewish theology. The Thirteen Principles of Faith, composed during the Middle Ages and traditionally recited every day after morning prayers, puts it as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. I believe with perfect faith that the prophecy of Moses is absolutely true. He was the chief of all prophets, both before and after him.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The compiler of the Principles was another Moses \u2013 the philosopher and halakhist, Moses Maimonides. Interestingly, about Moses Maimonides the following phrase circulated, already in the twelfth century during Maimonides\u2019 lifetime: \u201cfrom Moses to Moses there rose no one like Moses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    In turn, this phrase inspired further adaptations, including a most memorable reference, by Leopold Bloom in James Joyce\u2019s <\/span>Ulysses<\/span><\/i>, to the eighteenth-century Jewish scholar and political philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Three seekers of the pure truth, Moses of Egypt, Moses Maimonides, author of Moreh Nebukim (Guide of the Perplexed) and Moses Mendelssohn of such eminence that from Moses (of Egypt) to Moses (Mendelssohn) there arose none like Moses (Maimonides).<\/span><\/p>\n

    These chains of \u201cMoseses\u201d are small acts of Jewish brilliance. Of course, they begin by paying tribute to the incomparable greatness of Moses of the Torah, who gave us the Torah. Yet they also open the way for future Mosaic greatness. The message is clear. Even if your name happens not to be \u201cMoses,\u201d if you strive mightily enough to reach the intellectual and spiritual heights, you, too, might take your place in this chain of Jewish greatness. <\/span><\/p>\n
