It is hard to read this final chapter of Deuteronomy and the Chumash without shedding a tear at the loss of our beloved Moses, even with this much temporal distance.The narrative tells us that Moses was one-of-a-kind: never will there be another like him. And yet, we are not given more than general information on his burial place, and to this day that location has remained hidden to us.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of our sages agree that, given the Israelites\u2019 proven propensity toward \u00a0idol worship (witness the golden calf), and given the sincere and warranted attachment of the Israelites to Moses, there was a very possible risk that his burial place could become a shrine or focus for deification. And for this reason, God has ensured that Moses\u2019 final resting place remain unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, we\u2019ve actually done a pretty good job of understanding how to interact with our biblical leaders\u2019 burial sites. Israel is replete with graves we visit regularly, and when we do so, we don\u2019t pray to the buried, we pray that in their merit our prayers be answered by God. So, although we know that there never was and never will be a leader of Moses\u2019 caliber, are those whose graves we do visit disparaged in some way by the mere fact that we know where they are? <\/span><\/p>\n

There is another explanation offered for God hiding Moses\u2019 burial place. Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, the Israelites are exhorted to accept that Moses will not accompany them into Israel, and that they must be prepared to accept their new leader, Joshua, and move forward to conquer the land. God understood that Moses\u2019 grave could be a hindrance to the Israelites moving on, both spiritually and physically. This is the location from which the Israelites are about to make their biggest move. Moses\u2019 burial site should not hold them back, and God gave them permission to let go, move on, and never return. <\/span><\/p>\n

So forward we moved to the land of Israel: to self-determination, to nationhood, to a place in which we can know the burial places of our leaders because it is the place, both spiritually and geographically from which we should never move on.<\/span><\/p>\n
