The palace is silent,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The throne room \u2014 empty.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where are the royal advisors,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The chamberlain, the viceroy? <\/span><\/p>\n

Where is the king?<\/span><\/p>\n

The castle’s gardens have no gardener;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The castle’s kitchen \u2014 no baker, no cook;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The castle’s orchards \u2014 no one to pluck their fruit;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The castle’s vineyards \u2014 no one to harvest the grapes. <\/span><\/p>\n

Where is the king?<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside the walls, enemy soldiers gather,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Infantrymen with spears,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Archers with bows,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Cavalrymen on mounted horses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where is the king? <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the mud by the riverside<\/span>
\n<\/span>And the sand by the shore<\/span>
\n<\/span>I find <\/span><\/p>\n

Footsteps of the servants of the king.<\/span><\/p>\n
