\u201cClimb up this mount of passage, Mount N\u2019Voh, in the land of Moab opposite Jericho, and from there view the land of Canaan which I am giving to the Children of Israel to inherit. \u00a0And die there on the mountain which you are climbing\u2026.\u201d (Deuteronomy 32:49-50)<\/span><\/p>\n

How steep these cliffs we must ascend \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>No gentle, wide plateau<\/span>
\n<\/span>Will make our climbing easier<\/span>
\n<\/span>When scaling Mount N\u2019Voh.<\/span><\/p>\n

How frozen are these lifeless peaks \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>How full of ice and snow \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>The promised land below is mild,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Far warmer than N\u2019Voh. <\/span><\/p>\n

How bright the lights in the promised land<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where altar-fires glow \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>How dark and cold the moonless nights<\/span>
\n<\/span>On barren Mount N\u2019Voh. <\/span><\/p>\n

How long we\u2019ve prayed to work the land,<\/span>
\n<\/span>To make its barley grow,<\/span>
\n<\/span>To eat its figs, to drink its wine \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>To leave behind N\u2019Voh. <\/span><\/p>\n

How hard it is to mount these bluffs \u2014 <\/span>
\n<\/span>Yet harder still to know<\/span>
\n<\/span>That all we\u2019ll have of the promised land<\/span>
\n<\/span>Is the view from Mount N’Voh. <\/span><\/p>\n

How close the fertile promised land<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where streams and rivers flow;<\/span>
\n<\/span>But most of us will not descend<\/span>
\n<\/span>The summit of N\u2019Voh. <\/span><\/p>\n

How few the chosen, lucky ones<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who reach the path below<\/span>
\n<\/span>And find the way to the promised land \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>Released from Mount N\u2019Voh. <\/span><\/p>\n

How many are the barriers \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>How high protrudes N\u2019Voh \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>How massive is the prison-gate<\/span>
\n<\/span>Which will not let us go.<\/span><\/p>\n
