And Moses instructed them as follows: Every seventh year, the year set for remission, at the Feast of Booths, when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God in the place that He will choose, you shall read this Teaching aloud in the presence of all Israel. Gather the people\u2014men, women, children, and the strangers in your communities\u2014that they may hear and so learn to revere the LORD your God and to observe faithfully every word of this Teaching. Their children, too, who have not had the experience, shall hear and learn to revere the LORD your God as long as they live in the land that you are about to cross the Jordan to possess (Deut. 31:10-14)<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the point where we learn what Moses has really been doing all along.<\/span><\/p>\n

We know he has been teaching the people Torah\u2014that much is obvious. We know he has been transmitting his final words, and along with them, the word of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the truth is, Moses is doing something more than that. Moses is modeling what the Jewish people will have to do for as long as we want Torah to exist among us. Moses is teaching the people how to teach Torah: to themselves, to each other, and to their children who never saw or experienced what they did. Moses is teaching a generation that never saw Sinai what it means to teach Torah to your children so that they feel the fire and the voices in their bones. He is teaching them what it means to feel as if your ancestors sins are your sins, as if their encounters with God are yours. And most important of all, Moses is teaching them how to transmit that to their children as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Moses will never meet the grandchildren of the generation he is teaching at this moment. But in teaching the people how to teach them one day, he can be sure that their grandchildren will feel as though they know him. <\/span><\/p>\n
