In the first part of our chapter, Moses recounts the trials, the signs and the great wonders that the Israelites assembled before him have seen (29:1-16). Among these wonders Moses specifically mentions: \u201cI led you through the wilderness forty years. The clothes on your back did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet\u201d (verse 4). <\/span><\/p>\n

The Midrash (Deuteronomy Rabbah 7:11) elaborates on the extraordinary clothing of the Israelites who participated in the Exodus from Egypt and the years of Wandering in the Desert of Sinai: Rabbi Yose ben Hanina said: The clothes they wore did not get old, but those packed in their baggage did get old. Rabbi Eleazar, the son of Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai asked Rabbi Shimon ben Yose, his father-in-law: Were the clothes that the Israelites wore in the desert made of leather, that they did not wear out? Rabbi Shimon ben Yose answered? No. Their clothes were those given to them by the ministering angels at the Giving of the Law at Mount Sinai, and this is why the heavenly clothes on their backs never wore out. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai asked further: But did the Israelites not outgrow their clothes in forty years?! Rabbi Shimon ben Yose replied: Do not be so surprised, for when a snail grows, its shell grows with it. Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai then asked: Did their clothes not need washing? Rabbi Shimon ben Yose replied: The pillar of cloud that accompanied the Israelites scrubbed their clothes clean. Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai then asked: But since the cloud consisted of fire, were clothes cleaned in this way not burnt? Rabbi Shimon ben Yose replied: Don\u2019t be so surprised, for asbestos withstands fire and that is how it is cleaned. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai asked: But, did not pests breed in the same clothes worn for forty years?! Rabbi Shimon ben Yose replied: The Israelites who died in the Desert, worms did not multiply in their bodies. So, how much the more so would pests not have breed in their clothing while they were alive. Finally, Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai asked: But, did the Israelites not themselves smell badly because of perspiring in the same clothes for forty years?! Rabbi Shimon ben Yose replied: The Israelites made pleasurable use of sweet-scented grass that grew around the wells from which they drank, as it says: \u201cThe scent of your robes is like the scent of Lebanon \u2026 You are a garden spring, a well of fresh water\u201d (Song of Songs 4:11-15). <\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, in our day, fire-resistant fabric has been developed for use by those exposed to fire in their vocations. And several start-ups have developed clothes that they claim need no washing for up to 100 days of continuous use. <\/span><\/p>\n

But forty years of continuous wear would certainly remain in the realm of the
