After entering the land, the people are supposed to split the tribes in half, ascend opposite mountains surrounding the Levites and the Ark, and utter a series of curses against a long list of sins. There are many strange details here, but one of the most strange is why do they curse these specific sins and not others?

Additionally, while in the Torah, this ritual seems to consist of exclusively curses, the Mishnah, in Masechet Sota, says that each curse is preceded by the inverse blessing. These blessings are a bit odd, because it seems to set a very low bar for blessing. Does it really make sense to bless someone simply for refraining from committing a heinous sin?

The answer to both of these questions can be found in a teaching from Rashi. He explains that each of the curses corresponded to a particular tribe, cursing the sin that each tribe was most inclined towards, and had committed most in the past. The curses were not a random selection of sins, but rather specific sins corresponding to each tribe within the nation. This understanding also helps illuminate our second question, of why we would bless someone simply for refraining from sinning. Because each tribe has a history of, and affinity for each sin, refraining from it really is a cause for blessing.

But what is the purpose of publically reciting the “pet sin” of each tribe? In the Ishbitzer Rebbe’s explanation of this ritual, he starts by explaining why Torah was given to people and not to angels. According to the Ishbitzer, Torah was given to people because they need it. Unlike angels, we have failings and weaknesses that cause us to need Torah, and the role of Torah in our lives is to help us be more complete despite these failings.

This explanation for why Torah was given to humans helps illuminate the purpose of each tribe making its failings visible through these curses. They are all essentially saying to each other, “I too am human.” By naming their faults, they are making their need for Torah, and their humanity, visible to each other.

This shared admission was necessary before they began the process of building a society in the Land of Israel together. With each curse, they laid bare their humanity and need for Torah, and with each blessing they voiced a hope for a better future, and armed with this collective knowledge, they were able to begin the task of building a new world.
