It was the point at which paradigms shifted, the end of one thing and the beginning of another. It was a conceptual and imaginative barrier just as much as a physical one. On the other side, nothing would be the same and everything would be different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this makes it even more remarkable that the first thing to be done on the very first day on the other side, Day Zero of the rest of Jewish history, was to erect a monument to writing; \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as you have crossed the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones. Coat them with plaster and inscribe upon them all the words of this Teaching. When you cross over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We generally think of the monumental as purely visual- the Lincoln Memorial is the exception that proves the rule. This extraordinary vision of the Torah written on plaster, standing sentinel over the exact place where the miraculous yields to the mundane, signifies that the presiding spirit of this Land, with its briny seas and fickle soil and holy hills, will be textual. The Word is to be in the World, and the presence of this writing indicates that Israel is not only supposed to be a polity, but also a culture.
