\u201cIf a man has two wives \u2026\u201d (Deuteronomy 21:15)<\/span><\/p>\n

Can a man have two wives?<\/span><\/p>\n

My first wife, whom I love, is English.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Every weekday morning we walk together, hand in hand,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the botanical gardens, or along the promenade by the sea.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She carries a parasol to shade her fair skin from the sun<\/span>
\n<\/span>As we discuss Donne\u2019s sonnets and Shakespeare\u2019s plays.<\/span><\/p>\n

My second wife, whom I love, is Hebrew.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Every Friday evening we sit together by candlelight<\/span>
\n<\/span>And drink wine, as her fingers gently clasp mine.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She rests her head on my shoulder as we whisper<\/span>
\n<\/span>Verses from <\/span>The Song Of Songs<\/span><\/i> to one another.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it so terrible for a man to have two wives?<\/span><\/p>\n

My first wife, whom I love,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Wears thick woolen sweaters to ward off the cold,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And loves the sun; and I love how the sun<\/span>
\n<\/span>Is reflected in her thick, blonde hair when she lowers the parasol<\/span>
\n<\/span>And talks of her teachers, Blake and Keats.<\/span><\/p>\n

My second wife, whom I love,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Wears a thin shawl of many colors to ward off the evil eye,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And loves the twilight; and I love how the twilight<\/span>
\n<\/span>Is reflected in her large, brown eyes<\/span>
\n<\/span>When she speaks of her teachers, Jeremiah and Rabbi Nachman.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet at night,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In a bed of marital intimacy,<\/span>
\n<\/span>These two merge into one:<\/span>
\n<\/span>One voice, one life,<\/span>
\n<\/span>One bond, one love, one wife.<\/span><\/p>\n

As I stroke her hair, her eyes, I whisper,<\/span>
\n<\/span>In our private language, a vow:<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cI have betrothed thee unto myself<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>B\u2019emunah <\/span><\/i>\u2014 In faithfulness,<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>L\u2019olam<\/span><\/i> \u2014 Forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
