There comes a point, in Deuteronomy,<\/span>
\n<\/span>when I can\u2019t help wondering\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>is this the match that lights the eternal fire? <\/span><\/p>\n

The injunctions to <\/span>cast them out<\/span><\/i>,<\/span>
\n<\/span>smite them,<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>and <\/span>utterly destroy them<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The commands to<\/span>
\n<\/span>make no covenants<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>and <\/span>show no mer<\/span><\/i>cy. <\/span><\/p>\n

And just a little later,<\/span>
\n<\/span>the permission, if not<\/span>
\n<\/span>a direct order: <\/span><\/p>\n

And if it will make no peace with thee,<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>but will make war against thee,<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>then thou shalt besiege it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

How much more I prefer those other sacred words<\/span>
\n<\/span>replete with possibility, and hope:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Turn from evil and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

How much more easily, then,<\/span>
\n<\/span>the word <\/span>Amen<\/span><\/i> springs from my soul<\/span>
\n<\/span>to my mouth. <\/span><\/p>\n

How vigorously I cling<\/span>
\n<\/span>to the belief that everyone<\/span>
\n<\/span>shares this preference.<\/span><\/p>\n
