We cannot sleep, for dreams are filled with dread<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of what we fear the most \u2014 the shibboleth<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of war, the eightieth, the ninetieth,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The hundredth time we dream our sons are dead.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Each night we dream the monster lifts her head<\/span>
\n<\/span>Above our soldiers’ open graves; each breath<\/span>
\n<\/span>She breathes is rank with death \u2014 our children’s death;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Her mouth is red with blood our sons have bled. <\/span><\/p>\n

We shudder as we cry for help, O Lord,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Against the monster’s fangs, without a shred<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of hope our children can survive her claws,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Unless You beat her polished, two-edged sword<\/span>
\n<\/span>Into a ploughshare’s tarnished blade instead;<\/span>
