\u201cYou shall have no other gods besides Me. \u00a0You shall not make unto yourself a statue, a picture of anything \u00a0of what is in the heavens above, or on the earth below, of in the waters beneath the earth. \u00a0You shall not bow down to them or worship them \u2026..\u201d (Deuteronomy 5:7-9). <\/span><\/p>\n

I came to paint God\u2019s portrait. <\/span><\/p>\n

But where would I find the colors?<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

After entering the Palace grounds, I looked at the royal gardens<\/span><\/p>\n

And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>The light green of spring grass in Tiberias,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The dark green of the ocean near Haifa after sunset,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The bright green of a feather from a peacock in Kibbutz Sa\u2019ad. <\/span><\/p>\n

I looked into a courtyard in Zefat<\/span>
\n<\/span>And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>The pale sky-blue of the synagogue walls,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The dark blue of the stripes on the <\/span>tallit<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>Worn by a <\/span>lamed-vovnik<\/span><\/i> as he silently prayed. <\/span><\/p>\n

I looked into the future of Israel<\/span>
\n<\/span>And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>The purple of the capes adorning King David\u2019s grandchildren<\/span>
\n<\/span>As they solemnly parade through the streets of Jerusalem,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Marching slowly to be anointed at their coronation. <\/span><\/p>\n

I looked into the Torah<\/span>
\n<\/span>And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>The dark red from the blood of the sacrifices in <\/span>Leviticus<\/span><\/i>,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The bright red of the rubies on the breast-plate<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of the high-priest in the <\/span>Book of Exodus<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

I looked at the <\/span>tzaddikim<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>The soft brown of their eyes<\/span>
\n<\/span>When they turn to the beggars of Beer-Sheva,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Then speak to them and shake their hands. <\/span><\/p>\n

I looked into my own soul<\/span>
\n<\/span>And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>The soft yellow of my infant daughter\u2019s hair,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The bright yellow of dreams I dream while resting<\/span>
\n<\/span>On the sand of a Tel-Aviv beach under the midsummer sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

But these colors were not enough. <\/span><\/p>\n

So I looked at the land promised to my ancestors<\/span>
\n<\/span>And placed on my palette<\/span>
\n<\/span>Not only the orange of citrus fruits in the orchards near Rechovot,<\/span>
\n<\/span>But also the gray of the clouds above <\/span>Mt. Herzl<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>And the black of the night sky above <\/span>Yad VaShem<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

And after I spent generations painting the portrait,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Behold my picture: <\/span>
\n<\/span>A canvas<\/span>
\n<\/span>Completely covered<\/span>
