Do not listen to confessions I tell the priest<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or what I mutter when kneeling in the church;<\/span>
\n<\/span>But listen to my unspoken words,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The words You alone can hear<\/span><\/p>\n

The way You listened to Esther<\/span>
\n<\/span>Recite the <\/span>Shma<\/span><\/i> to herself<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the temple of Marduk,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or bless the absent Sabbath candles in her mind<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the darkness of the temple of Ishtar;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The way you listened to Esther\u2019s silence<\/span>
\n<\/span>When she lay in the king\u2019s bed.<\/span><\/p>\n

God of Esther, hear my prayer \u2014<\/span>

Do not look at how I cross myself<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or bow before marble statues in the cathedral;<\/span>
\n<\/span>But look behind the cellar doors I lock<\/span>

\n<\/span>Or hide the <\/span>Afikoman <\/span><\/i>and drink<\/span>
\n<\/span>Four cups of <\/span>Seder<\/span><\/i> wine<\/span>

\n<\/span>The way you looked beneath Esther\u2019s mask<\/span>
\n<\/span>And watched her weep<\/span>
