He just can\u2019t stand that God won\u2019t let him enter the Land of Israel along with the children of the people he has spent his entire lifetime liberating. As he begins to make his pitch to the Holy One, he praises God with his two best compliments. Listen carefully to what Moses says, \u201c(1) You who let Your servant see the first works of Your greatness and Your mighty hand, (2) You whose powerful deeds no god in heaven or on earth can equal (Dt 3:24).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two best compliments Moses can offer God is that he has revealed really impressive acts of greatness and might, and that there is no one whose power equals that of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first complement offers an assessment based on personal experience. Having personally witnessed the extent to which God\u2019s action led to the liberation of the Children of Israel, Moses speaks of God\u2019s greatness and might in the context of that relationship. It wasn\u2019t the action in a vacuum that was so miraculous. The miracle is found in letting Moses and the Hebrews witness them. We carry that testimony with us everywhere we go, and in the bleakest moments of our lives, we know that there is a cosmic liberator who works in and through us all. God\u2019s might is revealed in relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second complement is even more wondrous and revealing. God is praised for deeds that reveal greater power than any possible rival, any other god in heaven or earth. Yet if God is without any rival, if God is omnipotent (literally, possessing ALL the power), then this becomes a pretty paltry complement indeed: You, God, have more power than imaginary fictitious beings. Or, You, God, having 100% of the power, are more powerful than those who have 0% of it. Not exactly the kind of flattery you want to paste in your scrapbook or email to a loved one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what is Moses saying here? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps what he highlights is that God\u2019s power and greatness are not measurable by the rubric of other, lesser powers. We measure Pharaoh\u2019s power by his ability to coerce loyalty or dictate outcome. But God\u2019s power respects the integrity of creation, including human freedom. God works with us, luring us to become allies of righteousness, decency, and justice. But we, in the end, choose whether to advance God\u2019s sovereignty or to hinder it. The Children of Israel have to sign on to God\u2019s invitation to freedom. And they must do so voluntarily. The miracle of the plagues lie not in their coercive capacity, but in their ability to encourage the Israelites, to inspire us, \u00a0give us a taste for what freedom can offer. And then to lure us to get up, stand up, and march to
