Winter morning in the desert, after rain.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Surrounded by dull red-brown boulders<\/span>
\n<\/span>In a large basin carved in rock,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A pool of water rests;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Tiny black specks zigzag.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Oblivious to impending evaporation and coming months of drought,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Tadpoles dart<\/span>
\n<\/span>And dance.<\/span><\/p>\n

How in God’s name did they get here<\/span><\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n

Did a spell, once cast by some ancient sorcerer<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who discovered how Pharaoh’s wizards created frogs,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Summon up, through still potent incantation and imprecation,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Life?<\/span><\/p>\n

Or do the magicians of Moab and Midian<\/span>
\n<\/span>Still live?<\/span>
\n<\/span>Or simply spontaneous generation? <\/span><\/p>\n

Scientists say microscopic eggs survive desert heat and aridity,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Patiently waiting months and years<\/span>
\n<\/span>For the sudden outburst of a rare winter storm<\/span>
\n<\/span>To flood the wadi<\/span>
\n<\/span>And release<\/span>
\n<\/span>The miracle. <\/span><\/p>\n

God –<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the bleak, parched barrenness of our lives<\/span>
\n<\/span>Can You awaken tadpoles,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Tiny black dots darting<\/span>
\n<\/span>Awareness<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of Your presence?<\/span>
\n<\/span>On the dry, brittle stone surface of our hearts<\/span>
\n<\/span>Grant rain;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Let tadpoles<\/span>
\n<\/span>Live;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Let tadpoles<\/span>
