The older rabbi told his younger colleague, “You have to be a good actor.”

The younger rabbi had not expected it, and yet there is truth that we all need to play roles at times, just as the priest is carefully costumed for his role as atoner for the people. Perhaps Moses, who we know to be the “most humble of all men” (Numbers 12:3) felt himself unable to play a role, unable to do something not purely in his emotional range. I think of Moses as like Cordelia in Shakespeare’s King Lear who was unable to “heave my heart into my mouth” (i.i.92-93). Both were unwilling to dissemble whether it accrued to their benefit or not. Aaron, who we know as a “pursuer of peace” (Pirkei Avot 1:12). was someone more willing to play a role, to compromise and do what is necessary to atone for others and to bring them together.

Aaron was capable of dressing himself in the physical garments of the priest and playing that role where Moses is absent from the drama of the priesthood, its vestments and preparations for its service that Tetzaveh discusses. Moses humility enables him to absent himself so that the most suitable one for the role, his brother Aaron, can perform it best.

2019-05-29
