The fifth book of the Five Books of Moses is commonly known as Deuteronomy, from \u201csecond law\u201d (<\/span>deutero+nomos<\/span><\/i>) in Greek. This name parallels the rabbinic moniker for the book, Mishneh Torah \u2013 \u201csecond Torah\u201d in Hebrew \u2013 which derives from Deuteronomy\u2019s exhortation that the Israelite king \u201cshall have a <\/span>copy of this Teaching<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>mishneh Torah<\/span><\/i>) written for him on a scroll\u201d (Deuteronomy 17:18). Indeed, Deuteronomy reads like a copy \u2013 a repetition \u2013 of many of the stories and laws already encountered in earlier parts of the Torah. Already the very first chapter of the book tells the tragic story of the Israelite spies, after it was previously told in great detail back in Numbers chapters 13 to 14. Another prominent example of Deuteronomy\u2019s retellings is the Ten Commandments related in Exodus 20, and at Deuteronomy 5.<\/span><\/p>\n

Repetition is, by many accounts, one of the unforgivable sins of communication. TED talks are celebrated precisely because they convey ideas concisely, without meandering and without repetition. Good writing proceeds from one paragraph to the next, perhaps briefly summarizing points along the way, but never retelling what was already told. Likewise, modern art and modernist aesthetics aspire to originality, trying to express that which has never been expressed before. In such a scheme, there is no room for reprise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deuteronomy presents us with another model, where repetition is not a bug but a feature. The reprise has, as of late, been celebrated in postmodern writing about art and aesthetics. Sophisticated cultural products, like experimental fiction, edgy film, and contemporary dance, frequently employ the reprise and re-evoke earlier scenes from different perspectives. One of the effects of this strategy is to show how nothing stands sufficiently on its own, and there are always fresh perspectives to be had. <\/span><\/p>\n

In its very name, Deuteronomy\/Mishneh Torah teaches us the value of repetition and reprise. We may think we know the once-told stories and laws of biblical past, but when Moses retells them, we realize that the familiar is never fully understood, and that there is always more to
