Although set back in Oklahoma, those last minutes between father and son in the quiet foggy early morning, awaiting for the rickety bus to appear around the corner – you can feel the chill through the screen as the letters \u201cHair\u201d with the familiar tune appear – always remind me of Moses in this chapter:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 You got all your stuff?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Oh yeh<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 When you get there, be sure to give us a call so we know where you are<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Fine (silence, except the sound of their footsteps echoing as they walk to the nearby junction, the son flags the approaching bus to stop)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Let me give you some money<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Oh, I\u2019m ok<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Just take it, in case you run into sum\u2019 amount of trouble; you never know what can happen<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Thank you<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Well boy (slap on shoulder) It\u2019s just the smart people who got to worry; the Lord will take care of them idiots (a chuckle, a semi-very awkward hug) well, see you.<\/span><\/p>\n

And off he goes to a world his parents know not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike Claude Hooper Bukowski\u2019s dad, who maybe can\u2019t find his words, Moses has lots to say; so much so, that his book is called in Hebrew \u201cDvarim,\u201d meaning \u201cthings\u201d but also \u201cwords\u201d, reminding us that we don\u2019t believe in the \u201csticks and stones will break your bones but words will never hurt you\u201d phrase. <\/span><\/p>\n

We tell a story in which the whole world was created through words, and Moses here, as if in a magical spiral, connects us back to that very Beginning in Genesis. There, the human being at the moment of transformation to a living soul was called in the Aramaic translation \u201c<\/span>Ru\u2019ach Milela<\/span><\/em>\u201d, a speaking soul (Genesis 2:7). <\/span><\/p>\n

The same Torah now ends with the person who had a speech challenge, giving a full book of \u201cwords\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n
