The aforementioned opening phrase, in Hebrew, \u201celeh hadevarim asher diber Moshe,\u201d doesn\u2019t just clue us in to the authorship, it also allows for divergent perspectives from earlier parts of the Torah and shows Moses\u2019 remarkable personal growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase \u201cevery excuse in the book\u201d may have been invented when God appeared to Moses at the burning bush. Moses uses every excuse he can think of to refuse God\u2019s request of leading the Israelites. When all else fails, Moses says \u201clo ish devarim anochi\u201d I am not a man of words, not in the past and not now. Some forty years later, in addition to all his other accolades, Moses is a man of words. A commanding orator who brilliantly instructs his people with many many words that endures till today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the \u201cwords of Moses\u201d that diverge from the earlier stories in the Torah is his presentation of the sin of the spies. In Numbers 13 God instructs Moses to send twelve men to scout Canaan. They return with a damning report, and the nation spends the next 40 years wandering. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our chapter Moses tells the people \u201cAll of you approached me and said let us send men before us to spy out the land.\u201d Moses claims that it wasn\u2019t God who initially requested the spies, it was the nation\u2019s suggestion! The commentaries explain that sometimes all the details are included, and sometimes they are not. This explanation suggests that it was initially the nation\u2019s suggestion, but in the first presentation (for a good reason that I leave for you to ponder) the tale is told from the middle rather than from its true beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An intriguingly different answer points to the fallibility of memory. William Hirst, a psychology professor at the New School, has written at length about time-splice errors, where people remember facts about significant flashbulb events such as 9\/11, or the JFK assassination, but misremember details about the events, or how the pieces fit together. Over time different memories creep together in our brains, and sometimes create inaccurate, but coherent stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps over time Moses\u2019 memory recreated an inaccurate picture of the sin of the spies. A memory that squarely blames not just the critical report, and the Israelites reaction, but the entire spy story, from beginning to end on the nation. A necessary warning with the nation about to enter Canaan.
