The opening of the Book of Deuteronomy, the Torah’s Fifth and ultimate book, is strikingly different from the four that precede it. The cadence of its Hebrew shifts, and its vocabulary is distinctive: it presents itself as the farewell address of Moses, our Rabbi, as he prepares to see the Children of Israel surpass him by entering into the Land of Promise.

So one boundary is the launching of the Torah’s unique final book. The second boundary is that of the Land of Israel, where the Farewell Address is delivered.

All of these boundaries have me thinking about what it means to draw a line between here and there, between us and them. Boundaries aren’t always natural (think of how photographs of the Earth from space don’t show you were one nation starts and another stops). Boundaries are social conventions we treat as natural, even though they are not.

Another social convention we treat as natural is the way cultures assign level of significance to different people based on status, age, gender, wealth, strength or other aspects of their personal identity. We live with invisible Maps of Mattering (to use Rebecca Goldstein’s fetching phrase) that make it appear that some people matter more than others do. Old photographs of the US Congress revealed several hundred old white men. Those photographs used to look like a collection of powerful people. Times have changed and now they look like a collection of old, white men who are powerful (and excluding everyone else).

Which makes it striking and wonderful that the Book of Deuteronomy begins with a bold statement of radical inclusion: “These are the words that Moses addressed to all Israel… (Deut 1:1).” No one is left out of Moses’ grand vision. No one is marginalized or ignored in this great vision of what a beloved community should look like.

Deuteronomy isn’t a statement of what is. It presents Moses’ articulation of God’s vision of what ought to be. And the portal for that great society is one in which everyone feels addressed, in which everyone finds their path, their place.

Moses addresses “all Israel,” and we must do the same.

Dt1-inclusivity -
