“If he [the assailant] strikes him with a stone in his hand, a stone capable of killing a man, and the victim dies, he is a murderer\u2026” (Numbers 35:17) <\/span><\/p>\n

The artist awoke, startled by a dream<\/span>
\n<\/span>He knew he had to paint \u2014 how Abel cried<\/span>
\n<\/span>And stared in disbelief before he died,<\/span>
\n<\/span>As Cain picked up a stone, and with a scream,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Shattered his brother’s head. It didn’t seem<\/span>
\n<\/span>That hard to find the boyish, almond-eyed<\/span>
\n<\/span>Young man who looked like Abel. \u00a0But though he tried,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The artist failed to find his Cain, agleam <\/span><\/p>\n

With burning fire that lost its light. \u00a0For years<\/span>
\n<\/span>The artist searched in prisons till he found<\/span>
\n<\/span>A man who raped his sister in a stable,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Whose eyes were scorched, inflamed by sins and fears.<\/span>
\n<\/span>But then, the rapist gasped, as if he drowned,<\/span>
\n<\/span>“I was the boy you painted once as Abel.”<\/span><\/p>\n
