Moses recorded the starting points of their various marches as directed by the Lord. Their marches, by starting points, were as follows\u2026\u201d (Num 33:1-2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We close the Book of Numbers with a long walk down memory lane, recalling the various stops taken on the trek. The journey of decades stretched across time and space, but the finish line was suddenly coming into view. Lest the reader think that the Israelites were constantly on the move, Rashi demonstrates that this count indicates that in the 38 years up to this point, \u201cthey made only twenty journeys.\u201d \u00a0Twenty is plenty. Each move surfaced their own restlessness and inability to settle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locations by mention of their names alone manifest associations in the subterranean level of consciousness: Hiroshima, Gettysburg, Treblinka, Jerusalem. Each name dropped in Numbers 33 may have triggered thoughts of closeness to God, dislocation or rebellion. Mapping the trip spatially allowed them to map it emotionally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To this, Rashi adds another explanation, citing a parable stated by the sage Rabbi Tanhuma: \u201cIt may be compared to the case of a king whose son was ill and whom he took to a distant place to cure him. When they returned home the father began to enumerate all the stages, saying to him, \u201cHere we slept, here we caught cold, here you had the head-ache, etc.\u201d (Tanhuma 4:10:3). For this scholar, the journey represented an illness on the road to recovery, marked by waystations of healing. This reading also signals that the Israelites had finally reached a better place, physically and spiritually.
