As the process of settling the Land proceeds, two of the tribes, Gad and Reuben, decide that they don\u2019t want to settle within the Land of Israel, but rather to remain on the Transjordan side (outside but adjacent to the Land of Israel). They approach Moses to let him know of their changed plans, and his immediate response is rage: how can you abandon the rest of our people for the sake of your own comfort and wellbeing?<\/span><\/p>\n

But the conversation doesn\u2019t stop there. After chastising them (\u201cAre your brothers to go to war while you stay here (Num 32:6)?\u201d, Moses calls them sinners for abandoning the people. Surprisingly, the response of the tribes of Reuben and Gad isn\u2019t simply to fold and fall back in line. Instead, they defend themselves by insisting that they will settle the land they desire, then they will join with the rest of Israel to secure the land west of the Jordan, and only when that is complete will they return to their homes and families. With that assurance, Moses is appeased.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is surprising in this heated exchange is that Moses doesn\u2019t demand that everyone has to dwell within the Land of Israel. He demands that everyone identify with the Land, support Israel\u2019s life there, and participate in that new communal adventure. Once the two tribes pledge to stand with their brothers and sisters in advancing life in the Land of Israel, then Moses is supportive of their own reasons to remain outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, from the other direction, is is clear that the tribes of Reuben and Gad continue to identify and to express solidarity with their brothers and sisters of the other tribes of Israel, they just have their own reasons for not wanting to live there. They insist that they can fulfill their duties to the Jewish people without having to live within the land itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Solidarity. Shared destiny. Love of the Land. And the freedom to live where they choose. All with the approval of Moses (and, presumably, God). <\/span><\/p>\n

Are there implications for our own time?<\/span><\/p>\n
