“And in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is the Passover of the Lord.”

This is not a children’s game.
\n<\/span>This is not a game of <\/span>afikoman
\n<\/span><\/i>Hidden under a sofa pillow,
\n<\/span>And when the father comes closer, he’s told,
\n<\/span>“Hot \u2014 getting hotter.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not a game with ten pieces of <\/span>hametz
\n<\/span><\/i>Wrapped in aluminum foil,
\n<\/span>Hidden the night before Passover,
\n<\/span>Concealed beneath a newspaper on the kitchen table
\n<\/span>Or behind dolls in the girls’ bedroom,<\/span><\/p>\n

And when a child moves away, she’s told,
\n<\/span>“Cold \u2014 getting colder.” <\/span><\/p>\n

No, I’m not playing a game.
\n<\/span>I’m looking for You, <\/span>HaShem<\/span><\/i>,
\n<\/span>The hidden God.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I find You?
\n<\/span>The compass of the soul
\n<\/span>Points to a direction
\n<\/span>Diametrically opposite the route
\n<\/span>Taken by my lifeboat.
\n<\/span>And look \u2014 my boat is drifting, lurching
\n<\/span>With no helm, no rudder,
\n<\/span>No oars, no sails.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I find You
\n<\/span>Amidst the pages of sacred books
\n<\/span>Whose letters rise and fall
\n<\/span>Like ocean waves,
\n<\/span>From horizon to horizon?
\n<\/span>But I don’t know how to swim.
\n<\/span>Not even how to float.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Give me a clue, <\/span>HaShem<\/span><\/i>.
\n<\/span>If I come closer,
\n<\/span>Whisper, “Warm \u2014 getting warmer.”
\n<\/span>And when I move away,
\n<\/span>Warn me, “Cold \u2014 getting colder \u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span> Sleet \u2014
\n<\/span>An avalanche of snow \u2014
\n<\/span>Winter hibernation \u2014
\n<\/span>The north pole \u2014
\n<\/span>The frozen rings of Saturn \u2014”<\/span><\/p>\n

Give me a sign, <\/span>HaShem<\/span><\/i>,
\n<\/span>Even a small one
\n<\/span>That can barely be seen or heard.
\n<\/span>It would be enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

For I’m frightened
\n<\/span>Of ice,
\n<\/span>HaShem<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

(Or perhaps
\n<\/span>I’m frightened
\n<\/span>Of fire).<\/span><\/p>\n
