{"id":48440,"date":"2019-01-29T18:18:58","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T16:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=48440"},"modified":"2022-08-23T18:16:38","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T15:16:38","slug":"what-to-look-for-in-a-successor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/what-to-look-for-in-a-successor\/","title":{"rendered":"What To Look For In A Successor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[806,402,397],"acf":{"old_id":"48440","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":46656,"related_cahpter":"144","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"And how to transition that succession successfully","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving confirmation that he\u2019s not going to be leading the Israelites into the land of Israel, Moses asks God to appoint his successor, referring to God as \u201cthe God of all living souls\u201d and stipulating two required characteristics or skill-sets for his successor: 1) that he will \u201ccome in before them\u201d and 2) that he will \u201clead them out and bring them in (27:17)\u201d. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact there is a third characteristic of the new leader alluded to in the way Moses addressed God as the God of \u201call living souls\u201d (27:16). There is an opinion (Rashi) that this reference to individual souls is an acknowledgment that each member of the Israelite community has a unique personality, and their leader needs to be able to support each of them individually as well as, or maybe in order to lead the community as a whole. The other two required skills for Moses\u2019 successor have a distinctly military connotation. \u201cLeading them out and leading them in\u201d conjures images of battlefield leadership, which makes sense in the context of the next challenge to be faced by the Israelites: conquering the land of Israel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is a seeming disconnect between the requirements Moses suggests and God\u2019s response to appoint Joshua, \u201ca man of spirit:\u201d (27:18). Whether or not this allusion to spirituality is an additional characteristic or a more nuanced take on \u201cleading them out and bringing them in\u201d, it\u2019s clearly a central requirement for successorship to Moses. The next thing God commands Moses is to \u201clay your hands on Joshua and give him some of your splendor\u201d (27:19-20), followed by the instruction for the leadership hierarchy: Joshua will lead under the direction of the newly appointed high priest, Elazar, who will, in turn, lead through the usage of the Oracle provided by God (27:21). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in a very few, short verses of this chapter, we are given a blueprint for leadership and succession planning. An outgoing leader must pass something of him\/herself to the successor; the leader must be skilled in leading individuals as well as the communal group and have an understanding of the context in which they are leading; the chain of command and division of duties should be clear, and the leader should have both physical (in this case military) acumen as well as be possessed of a spiritual
