In one of the most troubling and violent tales of the Torah, God\u2019s strikes down the uprising of Korach and his followers against Moses, Aaron, Miriam, and their leadership. While Korach uses the language of radical democracy and equality, his assault on the wisdom, effectiveness, and experience of Moses is troubling, not only to the reader, but apparently also to God, who opens the earth and swallows Korach and his band whole. <\/span><\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all! After the earth closes over them, God tells Moses to remove the fire pans of the rebels and to \u201clet them be made into hammered sheets and plating for the altar (3).\u201d How astonishing that the very implements used to rebel against Moses (and God) attain a sanctity even as they fail. <\/span><\/p>\n

In a perverse way, Korach gets what he was seeking \u2013 a permanent place in the holiest spot on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lesson seems to be that we are, each of us, the result of our entire histories \u2013 the good, the tragic, the mistakes, the generosity and the malice. Everything we have done becomes a part of who we now are. It may be our choice how the past comes with us into the future, either as the launchpad for lessons learned and errors renounced, or as mistakes waiting to ambush us yet again as we repeat them tomorrow. But come with us, they will. All of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The altar of our lives is plated with the beaten copper of our experiences, joyous and sad. The ways we have lifted each other up, and they ways we have held each other down \u2013 all are beaten into the path of who we are becoming and how we got here in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n

My guess is that Moses must have sighed when he heard this command. After all, he must have reasoned, who hasn\u2019t acted in ways that we later regret? In behavior that harmed ourselves or the ones we love? And each time we approach the very altar of our heart, the innermost, sacred space, we will find ourselves face to face with the entirely of our past.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as God does with each one of us. In love, knowing our secrets already.
