JRR Tolkien\u2019s magnificent quest conveys a negative outlook on the military industry while presenting compelling heroes, all struggling to bring a ring of power to a certain far away volcano where it can be destroyed before falling into the hands of the enemy. There is a scene in the first movie where Gandalf, a wizard and wise old man archetype, is captured by the enemy. He escapes his perilous situation by summoning a giant eagle, onto whose back he jumps to fly back to his companions.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing the movie with my friends after, we all asked the following: If the volcano is so far away, why not just summon another giant eagle to carry them to the volcano and throw the ring in? The trilogy of books and almost 11 hours of movies could be shorter and quite easier for the heroes. But one of my friends noted, \u201cWell then the books and the movies wouldn\u2019t be very exciting. There\u2019s nothing worth reading or watching. It\u2019s all about the journey.\u201d He was right. The story wouldn\u2019t be very compelling if it had such a simple and easy path.<\/p>\n<p>The same applies to Israel\u2019s sojourn in the wilderness. Looking at a map of Israel and Egypt, you would think it should only take about a week to get the whole tribe across Sinai and over to Jericho, where the campaign into the Promised Land begins. Just like the Lord of the Rings, the extensive journey allows for an incredible transformation. Israel transforms from a mob of escaped slaves into a standing army, empowered by God\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers 14 provides an example of this transformation with a complaint scene, where Israel claims their journey is worthless. They fear they will be swamped by the imposing armies standing in between them and the Promised Land. When God threatens to destroy the ungrateful people, Moses intervenes. Moses argues that Israel will learn to appreciate God\u2019s will and instruction if they are led to success. The complaint scene allows an opportunity to reinforce how trusting in God\u2019s instruction will lead to success. The constant occurrence of these scenes in the wilderness narrative are essential to provide different lessons that encourage the development of Israel\u2019s
