For all the community are holy, all of them, and the Lord is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above the Lord’s congregation?’” (16:3).

The Midrash (Tanhuma Buber, Korah 4 and parallels) describes in detail how Korah questioned Moses’ leadership by referring to what comes immediately before in Numbers Chapter 15 — the Mitzvah of Tallit (the prayer shawl, with its fringes): “What is written in the preceding passage? ‘The Lord spoke to Moses saying: Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves Tzitit (“fringes”) on the corners of their garments throughout the ages. From Rabbinic times to our day, similar kinds of questions — but lacking any such pernicious intent — are sometimes asked by students of their rabbinic teachers, who appreciate this sort of intellectual give-and-take (shaqla’ ve-tarya’).

Significantly, the Rabbinic Hebrew expression that translates “a Tallit entirely of Tekhelet”, found in the Talmud (Yerushalmi, Sanhedrin 11:1, 27d) and in our ancient Midrashic texts has survived into Modern Hebrew. To say that someone is not a Tallit she-Kulah Tekhelet suggests that they are not as righteous as they make themselves out to be. Unbeknownst to most Hebrew speakers today, this modern usage of a Talmudic expression is, in effect, a colorful midrashic description of the biblical Korah. Korah is depicted as having made himself out to be even more halakhically observant than Moses, by suggesting an impractically strict interpretation of the Torah.

Korah’s misuse of Talmudic reasoning to further his rebellion against the authority of Moses ultimately failed miserably. As we read in the dramatic end of our Chapter: “…the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all Korah’s people and all their possessions. They went down alive into Sheol, with all that belonged to them; the earth closed over them and they vanished from the midst of the congregation” (16:32-33).

image: Gustave
