“Korah, the son of Izhar son of Kehat son of Levi, took Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eliav, and On, the son of Peleth \u2014 from the tribe of Reuben \u2014 and arose against Moses \u2026” (Numbers 16:1-2)<\/span><\/p>\n

It was hard to understand Moses’ speech.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He had a heavy Egyptian accent.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He swallowed words. <\/span>
\n<\/span>He stuttered. <\/span><\/p>\n

Aaron had to repeat everything Moses said.<\/span>
\n<\/span>To hear Aaron, though, was a pleasure,<\/span>
\n<\/span>His voice clear and articulate;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Still, Miriam spoke the best of all three. <\/span><\/p>\n

Moses’ wife never really mastered Hebrew.<\/span>
\n<\/span>May she forgive me, but she spoke haltingly,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Her vocabulary hobbled, her grammar limped.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Rumors have it she and Moses spoke only Midianite between themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was hard to understand Moses’ speech,<\/span>
\n<\/span>As if he were always translating something in his mind.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Rumors have it he spoke Egyptian like a poet and Midianite like a bard,<\/span>
\n<\/span>But his Hebrew \u2014 his Hebrew \u2014 <\/span><\/p>\n

Rumors have it that only in the Tent of Meeting,<\/span>
\n<\/span>After removing the veil that covered his face,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Only then did Moses speak fluently. Face to face.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Mouth to mouth. Finally free. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was hard to understand Moses’ speech.<\/span>
