\u201cBut as for you, your carcasses shall drop in this wilderness. \u00a0And your children shall be nomads in the wilderness for forty years, and will bear your unfaithfulness, until the last of your carcasses are consumed in the desert.\u201d \u00a0(Numbers 14:32-33)<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the ghosts<\/span>
\n<\/span>Of those who perished on the way,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who wandered in a howling wilderness with no exit,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Who withered and wasted away without water,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Forty years waiting to die.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are ghosts, doomed<\/span>
\n<\/span>To inhabit the desert we hated.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Egypt we left behind<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hovels in shantytowns of slaves,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And cemeteries of broken potsherds<\/span>
\n<\/span>Where we buried our fathers, our mothers<\/span>
\n<\/span>In dogs\u2019 graves. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our children \u2014 hungry for honey,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Thirsty for milk \u2014 went to the Land<\/span>
\n<\/span>We were afraid to enter,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Leaving us behind<\/span>
\n<\/span>In graves of camels and jackals.<\/span><\/p>\n

We ghosts know no rest,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Only regret.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the clefts of sandstone boulders and under sand-dunes,<\/span>
\n<\/span>We try to hide from the noontime sun<\/span>
\n<\/span>And from remorse, burning even stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we sniff our lost footsteps<\/span>
\n<\/span>In dried-out, bone-dry oases,<\/span>
\n<\/span>We try to imagine:<\/span>
\n<\/span>What is the taste of pomegranates?<\/span>
\n<\/span>What is the shade of fig-trees and vines?<\/span><\/p>\n
