With vivid brushstrokes, it paints a nation at loose ends, in a maelstrom of fear, panic, and bone-deep worry about its future. Despair is built into the lineaments and narrative strategy of the chapter. Quick cuts of third person narration interspersed with keening quotations weave an escalating portrait of a train careening off the tracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Torah moves from consideration of individuals to the peregrinations of a nation, these passages drill down into what it means for a communal entity to feel itself teetering on the precipice. The mix of murmuring and exclamation provides tonal accompaniment for this breakdown, and tracks the discontented rhythms of crowds, how they can seethe and explode, amalgamating into a composite person of troubling instability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debate staged in these conditions, between Joshua, Caleb, and the people, is at a high rhetorical pitch, but the outcome is determined by context, and it\u2019s a disaster. At this threshold moment, in this liminal space, past and future collide. The people react to an unknowable future by reaching back to tint an oppressive past; rose-colored cucumbers come into view, replacing milk and honey soured by fear. Remarkably, the people fantasize about an antecedent death, preferring non-being to non-knowing the future. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tears are most memorable of all. They drench the proceedings, giving the events a viscous and soaked-through valence. The crying goes through the night, a nocturnal wailing of startling duration. Rashi annotates it as a baseless crying, an unjustified indulgence that indicates a cracked compass and an evacuated faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somehow, that makes it feel even more sincere. We cry for joy or sadness, for some reasons and all reasons and no reason. Perhaps most poignantly of all, is that they are crying for the wrong tragedy-the one they imagine rather than the one that is transpiring in front of them. Their catastrophe became causative, and their panic our paragon of history gone awry.
