Gustave Dor\u00e9&#8217;s engraving \u201cReturn of the Spies from the Land of Promise\u201d and Giovanni Lanfranco&#8217;s painting \u201cMoses and the Messengers from Canaan\u201d both depict the men returning from their mission, carrying the fruits of the land. At first glance, the verses seem to support Dor\u00e9&#8217;s rendering, as Numbers 13:26 presents the spies speaking to both the leaders and the congregation. The very next verse, though, states \u201cthey told him,\u201d in the singular, suggesting that the spies spoke only to Moses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two possibilities relate to several other questions as well. What was the purpose of the spies&#8217; mission? Was it military in nature, in which case one would have expected a private debriefing, or was it a scouting mission meant to encourage the nation, necessitating a more public report? Even if one takes the latter possibility, one must question the logic of sharing a negative report with the masses.
