While the details of their distribution while encamped were provided earlier (chapter 2), they are reiterated here apropos of their travels. What reason informs that distribution?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that the primary consideration was tactical and that the distribution, by tribes and by flanks, was intended to provide the best possible defense in case of attack\u2014an ever present possibility since the moment of the exodus: \u201cGod did not lead them via the road of the Land of the Philistines [i.e., the coastal road] in spite of its proximity, God knowing that should the people engage in battle they would regret [their departure] and return to Egypt\u201d (Exodus 15:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we tabulate the number of men-at-arms available to each tribe (see chapter 1), and group them as indicated in our chapter (vs. 14-27), we quickly see that the Tabernacle was most closely guarded on its eastern and northern flanks, because the Israelites continually traveled east by northeast and that was where the greatest danger lay. Then came the southern flank, exposed to the desert and its marauders, and, finally, the western flank, which was the least protected because that was the direction whence they came and the Egyptian army was in no condition to pursue
