Where am I to get meat to give to all this people, when they whine before me and say, \u2018Give us meat to eat!\u2019 I cannot carry all this people by myself, for it is too much for me. If You would deal thus with me, kill me rather, I beg You, and let me see no more of my wretchedness!\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr; padding-left: 30px;\">Then the Lord said to Moses, \u2018Gather for Me seventy of Israel\u2019s elders of whom you have experience as elders and officers of the people, and bring them to the Tent of Meeting and let them take their place there with you. I will come down and speak with you there, and I will draw upon the spirit that is on you and put it upon them; they shall share the burden of the people with you, and you shall not bear it alone\u2019\u201d (Num. 11:12-17).<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oddly, after the Israelites complained about the lack of meat, Moses uses a metaphor involving milk to describe his leadership: a nursing mother. Moses understood something profound about the nature of his people\u2019s complaint. It had little to do with meat. It had to do with a desire for total dependence, the way that a baby relies entirely on the mother as a source of nourishment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provide meat was asked by Moses to refrain. \u201cBut Moses said, \u2018The people who are with me number six hundred thousand men; yet You say, \u2018I will give them enough meat to eat for a whole month.\u2019 Could enough flocks and herds be slaughtered to suffice them? Or could all the fish of the sea be gathered for them to suffice them?\u201d Rashi cites an interpretation from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tosefta Sota <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6:4 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is impossible to take them at their word, since they are only seeking a pretext; You will never satisfy them, and they will contend with you no matter what. If you give them beef they will say that they asked for mutton; if you give them mutton they will say they asked for beef, for fish, for grasshoppers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses recognized that in a culture of complaint, requests mount, become increasingly unrealistic and ultimately unable to be fulfilled. This provoked his despair and his desire for a permanent exit strategy. God helped Moses rise above this by giving 70 elders a fraction of Moses\u2019 spirit \u2013 colleagues with whom to create a positive, forward thinking energy to propel the Israelites out of the slump that entrapped them and almost caused the loss of their leader.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":106894,"id":106894,"title":"-62e7d8006fc33--62e7d8006fc35num11-negative feedback
