Incited by the \u2018mixed multitude\u2019, the Israelites complain about the food. It was an appalling show of ingratitude, but not the first time the Israelites had behaved this way. Moses\u2019 reaction takes us by surprise. For once, the hero of the Exodus experiences something recognizably like despair (Num. 11:14-15). It is an extraordinary outburst, and a puzzling one. Moses had faced and overcome such difficulties before. Each time, God had answered the people\u2019s requests. He had sent water from the rock, manna from heaven, and quails driven by the wind. Moses knew this. Why did this outburst of the people induce in him a complete breakdown? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equally strange is God\u2019s reaction (11:16-17). How would the appointment of elders address the crisis Moses was undergoing? He did not need deputies to help him find meat. Either it would appear by a miracle or it would not appear at all. Nor did he need help in sharing the burdens of leadership. Already, on the advice of his father-in-law Jethro, he had created a leadership infrastructure: heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. How would a new appointment of 70 elders make a difference?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And why the emphasis in God\u2019s reply on spirit: \u2018I will take of the spirit that is on you and put the spirit on them\u2019? The elders did not need to become prophets to help Moses in carrying out the burdens of leadership. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet it worked. Reading the text closely, we see that from this moment onward, Moses\u2019 despair disappeared. Immediately afterward, it is as if a new Moses stands before us, untroubled by even the most serious challenges to his leadership from Eldad and Medad, and then <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his own brother and sister<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Aaron and Miriam, complain about him. These two subsequent challenges were far more serious than the request of the people for meat, yet Moses meets them with confidence and equanimity. Something has taken place between him and God and he has been transformed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">God gave him a unique gift. He let Moses see the influence he had on others. For a moment God took \u2018the spirit that is on you and put it on them\u2019 so that Moses could see the difference he made to one group, the 70 elders. Once he had seen that, he needed nothing more: not their help, nor their prophecy. All he needed was to see, if only for a moment, that 70 elders had internalized his spirit and made his message their own. That was enough to know that his life was not in vain. He had disciples. His vision was not confined to him. He had planted it in others. They would continue his work after his lifetime.
