The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: ‘The Israelites shall camp each with his standard, under the banners of their ancestral house; they shall camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance’ (Num 2:1-2).<\/span><\/p>\n

A flag is a curious item \u2013 a scrap of cloth that can inspire a sense of unity and courage to those joined by its symbolism. Abraham Lincoln captured this very sentiment when he said, \u201cStanding as I do, with my hand upon this staff, and under the folds of the American flag, I ask you to stand by me so long as I stand by it.\u201d Jews around the world are moved by the blue and white on thousands of tiny Independence Day flags, the flag that lays on the shoulders of an Israeli Olympic medalist, or one draped on the coffin of a hero. It is no wonder, that each tribe had a flag on the ancient wilderness journey. <\/span><\/p>\n

The flag not only demarcated where to camp, it also created a sense of purpose, stability and togetherness, especially when times were difficult. Rashi on Numbers 2:2 explains what the standards are in the wilderness: \u201cEach banner shall have a different sign \u2014 a piece of colored cloth hanging on it, the colour of the one not being the same as the colour of another, but the colour of each tribe shall be like that of his stone that is fixed in the breastplate (of. Exodus 28:21). By this means everybody will be able to recognize his banner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Flags as visual symbols can also enrage or anger those who see them as a symbol of racism, an exclusive or oppressive flash of nationalist identity, or the colors of the enemy. Perhaps there were times when the Jews of the ancient desert community saw their flags as reminders of a punishment that seemed to last indefinitely. One wonders, at these times, why each tribe had a flag but there was no flag for the entire camp to offer a sliver of hope and direction? The clouds of glory may have been the ephemeral flag of the community, a reminder in the sky of transcendence.<\/span><\/p>\n
