In the beginning of our chapter, we are told how the Israelite tribes encamped in the Desert of Sinai: \u201cThe Israelites shall camp each by his flag and the emblems of their ancestral homes (<\/span>ish \u2018al diglo ve-otot le-vet avotam)<\/span><\/em>. They shall camp around the Tent of Meeting, but at a distance\u201d (Numbers 2:2). <\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Midrash (Numbers Rabbah 2:7) each tribe had a flag whose color was that of its stone in the <\/span>hoshen<\/em> <\/span>(breast-plate) of Aaron, the High Priest:<\/span><\/p>\n

Reuben\u2019s stone was ruby; the color of its flag was red and embroidered on it were mandrakes (see Genesis 30:14). <\/span>
\n<\/span>Simeon\u2019s stone was topaz; its flag was green and the town of Shechem (see Genesis 34:25-26) was embroidered on it. <\/span>
\n<\/span>Levi\u2019s stone was beryl; the colors of its flag were one third white, one third black, and one third red and embroidered on it were the Urim and Thummim (see Deuteronomy 33:8).<\/span>
\n<\/span>Judah\u2019s stone was a carbuncle; the color of its flag was blue like the heavens and embroidered on it was a lion (see Genesis 49:9).<\/span>
\n<\/span>Issachar\u2019s stone was a sapphire; the color of its flag was black like antimony and embroidered on it were the sun and moon by which the calendar is set (see I Chronicles 12:33). <\/span>
\n<\/span>Zebulun’s stone was an emerald; the color of its flag was white like silver indicating their wealth and embroidered on it was a ship (see Genesis 49:13). <\/span>
\n<\/span>Dan\u2019s stone was a jacinth; the color of its flag was sapphire red and embroidered on it was a serpent (see Genesis 49:17). <\/span>
\n<\/span>Gad\u2019s stone was an agate; the color of its flag was a blend of black and white and on it was embroidered a military camp (see Genesis 49:19). <\/span>
\n<\/span>Naphtali\u2019s stone was an amethyst, the color of its flag was light red like clear wine and on it was embroidered a hind (see Genesis 49:21). <\/span>
\n<\/span>Asher’s stone was an aquamarine; the colors of its flag were that of women\u2019s gemstones and embroidered on it was an olive tree (see Genesis 49:20 \u201chis bread shall be fat\u201d with olive-oil).<\/span>
\n<\/span>Joseph\u2019s stone was onyx, the color of its flag was jet black and embroidered on it were not one but two designs, one for each of Joseph\u2019s two sons, for Ephraim a bullock and for Manasseh a wild ox. <\/span>
\n<\/span>The stone of the tribe of Benjamin was jasper; the color of it flag was a combination of all the twelve colors and embroidered on it was a wolf (see Genesis 49:27).<\/span><\/p>\n

Just imagine how this would look in 3-D Technicolor!<\/span><\/p>\n
