<\/span><\/p>\n

Hidden<\/span>
\n<\/span>Behind the river <\/span>Sambatyon<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i>And the jagged, barren mountains of aloneness,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Dwells the tribe of Dinah \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>Women without husbands<\/span>
\n<\/span>To love,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Women without children<\/span>
\n<\/span>To embrace,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Women who rock empty cradles;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Women abused or raped and then discarded,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Battered women with bruises no salve can heal,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Shattered women whose slivered moons will never again be full,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Lonely women whose eyes are blinded by gray clouds;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Each one in her hut,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Without heat, without light,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Drinking cold, thin broth in the dark. <\/span><\/p>\n

And to the tribe of Dinah<\/span>
\n<\/span>Men come, too;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Broken-spirited men who limp and lean on canes,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hunchbacked men carrying burdens of failure on their shoulders,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Mute, brooding men who have lost all words of song;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Men with downcast eyes that stare at the dust,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Men who shudder when winds rattle in leafless trees,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Men who blink, unable to gaze at the glare of gray clouds at dusk;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Men who have never kissed a wife,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Never hugged a daughter,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Never stroked a son\u2019s soft hair;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Men who have never touched a star. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the tribe of Dinah,<\/span>
\n<\/span>No children play,<\/span>
\n<\/span>No children laugh,<\/span>
\n<\/span>But pain is born, and bourne;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Loneliness too.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Gray clouds envelop shattered slivers of the moon,<\/span>
\n<\/span>As winds scatter fallen autumn leaves;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Fog smothers all green;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Here, spring never arrives.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the tribe of Dinah,<\/span>
\n<\/span>No one talks;<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hands communicate in sign language:<\/span>
\n<\/span>“Pass the salt.”<\/span>
\n<\/span>“Close the door.” <\/span><\/p>\n

Only Dinah’s tribeswomen<\/span>
\n<\/span>And her clansmen<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hear her voice<\/span>
\n<\/span>As on each passing birthday,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Dinah
