The medical world is divided on the question of what is the most common malady in the world. Some say that it is the flu, with its various types and strains, and others will say that it has to be tooth decay. Still others will name “acid reflux,” otherwise known as heartburn (in Modern Hebrew, <\/span>tzarevet<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, it definitely could be the case the Israelites suffered from tooth decay in the desert (remember that the manna could instantly become toffee with sprinkles and bisli, covered in marshmallow). But the most common diseases during the period of wandering were first of all <\/span>tzara’at<\/span><\/i>, usually translated as leprosy, or at least it is the most often mentioned disease in the Book of Leviticus. It doesn’t just hit people, but it infects clothes and even the walls of houses. After that is <\/span>baheret<\/span><\/i>, skin discoloration, baldness, and\u2026 surprise, surprise! <\/span>Tzarevet<\/span><\/i>, which also appears twice in the book. But before we celebrate the deep pharmacological connections we have with our ancestors, know that what they called <\/span>tzarevet<\/span><\/i> was not today’s heartburn, but a skin condition, like a scar tissue. Admit it, that today’s version is greatly preferable.<\/span><\/p>\n
