A Jew gets up in the morning and decides to be holy. What should they do? This is exactly what Leviticus 19 was written for. It’s sort of the biblical parallel to the instruction manual in the glove compartment. The one that tells you how much oil, and exactly which kind to put in the carburetor or the radiator (you know, we should really bone up on those basics at some point), when to take it in for a tune-up, and in general what we need to do to make sure the car will serve us well over the long haul, so that it will start right up on the next cold morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what makes a Jewish person holy? If you’d ask us, we would probably go into all the duties towards God. Isn’t holiness something sublime, between a person and God?<\/span><\/p>\n

Actually, no. Out of 33 sections, after which you too would become a holy Jew, more than half (17) focus on the relationship between people and society. For instance, to curse a deaf person, or put a stumbling block before a blind person. 3 sections deal with a person and their family, and two more between people and the environment. In contrast, the relationship between a person and their Creator take up only 11 sections. Jewish holiness, it turns out, is first off about getting up for an elderly person on the bus.<\/span><\/p>\n
