The nation of Israel is poised to finally move on from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Har Sinai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Mount Sinai) and set out on their long journey through <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midbar Sinai<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the Wilderness of Sinai)<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 27 chapters we have been instructed in the details of how to offer the various sacrifices, as well as in dietary laws and laws of marriage and ritual purity. But one important reminder is given before we go:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThese are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the people of Israel in Mount Sinai\u201d (v. 34).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these words Leviticus, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">torat kohanim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, draws to a close. This last verse reminds us that the mitzvot, commandments, were given <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the children of Israel: God is the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commander<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commanded<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In commenting on this verse, Rabbeinu Bahya quotes R. Ilah in the Talmud Yerushalmi (Shabbat 13:3): \u201cIf the people of Israel will perform these commandments . . . as commandments, then they are <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitzvot<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if not they are not counted as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitzvot<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitzvot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take on the nature of commandedness only in the context of our relationship with God. When the Israelites are able to acknowledge, both individually and collectively, that our observance of the commandments is a vital component of the covenantal relationship that was sealed at Sinai, then, and only then, does that observance take on any meaning for us. Without that acknowledgement, the mitzvot are mere words and their observance nothing more than an empty, hollow performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As each of us walks through the wilderness of our own journey through life, may the purposeful adherence to the commandments lovingly given by God at <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Har Sinai<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be the cloud of glory that guides our path.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":74102,"id":74102,"title":"ez20-mitzva
