Adams went with a figure out of Greek mythology (Hercules), but Jefferson and Franklin each suggested a biblical theme. Jefferson wanted the seal to depict the Israelites leaving Egyptian slavery and bondage (a poignant choice given the controversy surrounding his views on slavery). Franklin wanted it to depict Moses splitting the Red Sea, the Egyptians drowning, and the Israelites safe on the far bank. To that, he would have added the caption: \u201cRebellion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to tyrants is obedience to God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, none of these designs carried the day and the actual seal (apparently inspired by Freemasons, with the motto: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E Pluribus Unum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can be seen on the back of a $1 bill, but it is a reminder of how close the Jewish and American experiences have often been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">image: Benson John Lossing&#8217;s (1856) interpretation of Benjmain Franklin&#8217;s 1776 design: Moses standing on the Shore, and extending his Hand over the Sea, thereby causing the same to overwhelm Pharaoh who is sitting in an open Chariot, a Crown on his Head and a Sword in his Hand. Rays from a Pillar of Fire in the Clouds reaching to Moses, to express that he acts by Command of the Deity. Motto, &#8220;Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to
