It is one of the many musings of Hamlet from which whole libraries have been hatched. In Act 3, the Prince of Denmark remarks \u201cour wills and fates do so contrary run.\u201d He\u2019s speaking from a particularly difficult vortex of injustice, crime, revenge, and power politics. Hamlet seems out of place in his own play, because he feels out of sorts in a world where cause and effect, reward and punishment, power and ethics all seem wildly out of whack. In Yeats\u2019s famous formulation, \u201cthe best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

In the mismatched worlds of <\/span>The Second Coming<\/span><\/em> and Hamlet\u2019s Denmark, indeed in the genre of tragedy more generally, the force comes from the injustice. Outcomes come crashing towards us with their own malevolent velocity, and the most we can hope for is to find shelter from the cascading cataclysms, which bear as little relation to our acts as the sun does to the atrocities it illuminates. <\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s chapter posits a radically different understanding of the physics of the moral universe. Here, blessing and curse are tightly wound to human action, which are causative, not merely correlative. It is a drama that features the full ensemble- the Divine, mankind, the sky and the earth and seeds and everything that can shine as a blessing or cast an accursed shadow. It is the cosmos as meritocracy, on the grandest of scales. <\/span><\/p>\n

And yet- the final verses in this chapter introduce the unpredictable element, the free and floating variable. God remembers our patriarchs, their soft ways and adamantine conviction, and he remembers our wonder when we left Egypt, and saw ourselves as free men and women, and our days stretched long and liberated.
