{"id":46138,"date":"2018-12-20T15:36:18","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T13:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=46138"},"modified":"2022-07-15T16:25:09","modified_gmt":"2022-07-15T13:25:09","slug":"old-or-new-which-is-preferable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/old-or-new-which-is-preferable\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Or New &#8211; Which Is Preferable?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[730],"acf":{"old_id":"46138","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":33877,"related_cahpter":"116","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"When it comes to wine and Torah, old has its advantages","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In detailing the many blessings in store for those who keep God\u2019s commandments, Leviticus 26:10 describes the blessing of abundant produce: \u201cYou shall eat old grain long stored, and you shall have to clear out the old to make room for the new.\u201d Studying this chapter at the end of the civil year, calls to mind the \u201cend of year sales\u201d needed to make way for the new products already on the way to stores to be put on sale from the beginning of the new year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is such overabundance really a blessing in what has been termed our contemporary \u201cAge of Abundance\u201d? It turns out that the question of which is preferable &#8212; Old or New? &#8212; is itself not only new but also old. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In praise of \u201caged\u201d learning, Mishnah Avot Chapter 4, Mishnah 20 records the following discussion: \u201cRabbi Yossi the son of Judah of Kfar HaBavli would say: One who learns Torah from youngsters, whom is he comparable to? To one who eats unripe grapes and drinks [unfermented] wine from the press. One who learns Torah from the old, whom is he comparable to? To one who eats ripened grapes and drinks aged wine. Said Rabbi Meir: Look not at the vessel, but at what it contains. There are new vessels that are filled with old wine, and old vessels that do not even contain new wine\u201d. \u201cAged wine\u201d &#8212; here a metaphor for mature, venerable learning &#8212; is accordingly to be preferred to more recent insights. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this text seems to disagree with another ancient teaching (Babylonian Talmud, Ta\u2019anit 7a): \u201cRabbi Nahman bar Isaac said: Why are the words of the Torah likened to a tree, as it is said, It is a tree of life to them that grasp it (Proverbs 3:18)? This is to teach you that just as a small tree may set on fire a bigger tree so too it is with scholars, the younger sharpen the minds of the older. This agrees with what Rabbi Hanina said: I have learnt much from my teachers (see Metzudat David to Psalms 119:99), and from my colleagues more than from my teachers, but from my disciples more than from them all.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From ancient times to our day, perhaps a balanced mixture of Old and New &#8212; learning from both young and old &#8212; is best of all. As we learn in Mishnah Avot Chapter 4 Mishnah 1: \u201cWho is wise?
