Indeed, it is emphasized that this \u201cshall be a statute forever throughout your generations\u201d (Leviticus 24:3). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash (Leviticus Rabbah 31:7 and parallels) elaborates on the light produced by this lamp, the seven-branched Menorah: \u201cThere were windows in the Temple, and from these windows light used to emanate to the world. Of Solomon\u2019s Temple it says, \u2018He made windows for the House, broad and narrow\u2019 (I Kings 6:4). How can the same windows be both broad and narrow? They narrowed toward the inside and broadened toward the outside, so that the light within would shine forth to the world. This may be contrasted to a human king, who, when he builds a palace for himself, makes the windows narrow on the outside, broadening out toward the inside in order to admit light into the interior. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the windows of the Temple were the opposite. They were narrow on the inside broadening out toward the outside in order to emanate the light from within. How was such light created? In the beginning, the Holy One, blessed be He, enveloped Himself as with a raiment and the whole world shone with the brilliance of His radiance , as Scripture says of God, \u201cYou wrap Yourself in light like a raiment (Psalms 104:2). From where did this primordial light first shine forth? \u00a0It was from the place where, in the future, the Temple would stand in Jerusalem that cosmic light shown forth unto the world. And indeed, to this day, the light of Torah continues to shine forth to the World from Zion and
