I see the world from my own vantage-point.
\n<\/span>But I hear your voice
\n<\/span>from any direction;
\n<\/span>sound calls me to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider:
\n<\/span>Eve finds the Fruit
\n<\/span>a pleasure to the eyes;
\n<\/span>but she and Adam hear
\n<\/span>the voice of God in the Garden, \u00a0
\n<\/span>and they know they have wronged Him.
\n<\/span>Eyes are a gateway to your pleasure;
\n<\/span>sound startles you
\n<\/span>from yourself
\n<\/span>toward another.<\/span><\/p>\n

ii<\/span><\/p>\n

We count out forty-nine years.
\n<\/span>On the fiftieth
\n<\/span>we blow the shofar,
\n<\/span>the trumpet.
\n<\/span>Debts are forgiven,
\n<\/span>land reverts to ancestral families,
\n<\/span>land goes fallow;
\n<\/span>slaves go free.
\n<\/span>To say:
\n<\/span>your borrower
\n<\/span>your land
\n<\/span>your slave
\n<\/span>have their own existence
\n<\/span>apart from yours.<\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/span><\/p>\n

We come to this understanding
\n<\/span>through the trumpet:
\n<\/span>through listening.<\/span><\/p>\n

iii<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the slave who shall go free
\n<\/span>in the fiftieth year,
\n<\/span>God says:
\n<\/span>he is owed freedom,
\n<\/span>you shall not see him worked brutally
\n<\/span>before your eyes.
\n<\/span>To say:
\n<\/span>train your eyes
\n<\/span>to find brutality
\n<\/span>to root it out.<\/span><\/p>\n

*<\/span><\/p>\n

For forty-nine years
\n<\/span>you ready yourself to hear the shofar:
\n<\/span>to listen,
\n<\/span>to hear around you.
\n<\/span>Learning to listen,
\n<\/span>you learn to use your eyes.
\n<\/span>Learning to listen,
\n<\/span>you learn to see.<\/span><\/p>\n
