Leviticus 19 is unlike any other chapter of the Bible. The chapter contains what seems like an eclectic collection of laws. Despite the many theories, nobody has put forward a compelling argument regarding the structure of the chapter. For example, the legislation meanders from ritual offering to economic justice, from criminal law to our internal mindsets. In addition, many of the laws in Leviticus 19 appear in other places in the Bible. Most of the Leviticus 19 is not really new or unique.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what is the purpose of this chapter? After all, if I want to learn about ritual offerings I can go to the early chapters of Leviticus. If I want to learn about honoring one\u2019s parents, I can go to the Ten Commandments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The primary point of this chapter is to frame <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> biblical law under the theme of <\/span>kedoshim tihyu<\/span><\/em>, \u201cyou should aspire to holiness.\u201d I like to imagine the author of this chapter surrounded by biblical scrolls containing material like the Ten Commandments, the laws in Exodus, parts of Deuteronomy and even parts of Proverbs. The author takes a snippet of law from here and there, being sure to include material from all genres of legal material. <\/span><\/p>\n

These snippets refer us back to the fuller collections of laws. So, for example, when Leviticus 19 begins with honoring one\u2019s parents, observing Shabbat and refraining from worshipping other gods, these citations are intended to getting us thinking about the whole of the Ten Commandments and not just these three specific laws. It is as if the writer is saying, \u201cHey, I know you are familiar with the Ten Commandments and the other laws in the Bible, but I want you to be aware that we observe these laws because God wants us to aspire to holiness, to emulate God in every way possible. When we leave a portion of our fields for the poor to harvest or when we take the time to reprove a friend rather than bearing a grudge, we are creating a more holy community, a more God-like community.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Torah brings holiness into the
