There are many reasons why we should be expected to be holy. It might make life more meaningful and nations more peaceful. In a world strewn with the wreckage of crumbled idols and tempting sirens, it seems wise to aim for the satisfying strictures and wholesome practices that holiness might bring. Of course, there is another side to holiness; the scorched carobs, the mooning after the apocalypse by the ascetics at Qumran, the withdrawal of concern from a hopelessly unredeemed world, the grisly revelation delivered by the edge of a sword or fuse-lit Scripture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Companionably, we are commanded to be holy because God Himself is holy. <\/span>Imitato Dei<\/span><\/i>, the notion that its best for creatures to imitate their creator, a model who will never fail us because He made us. There is mystery in how this works exactly. Do we arrive at this holiness through analogy, metaphor, or continuum with the Divine? How does our holiness match up with His, how does it translate from the earth to the empyrean?<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the key to understanding what it might mean to strive for holiness is to see it as an easily convertible currency. The currency finds holiness everywhere; in days of the week and in the market, in offerings and offices, in plantings and pens. It takes a different form in each of these, of course, and maybe that\u2019s the idea. Holiness is what we have in common at our best moments. It\u2019s the common denominator that shows us how uncommonly wonderful the world can be. And in its qualities of mercy and elegance, discretion and discernment, common cause and wise distinction, holiness brushes us, barely but perceptibly, with the kind of fullness and wholeness that first brought us to this scarred and fractured planet. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
