In the German concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen in 1944, the Jewish prisoners had no matza. The rabbis in the camp allowed them to eat bread on Pesach, since without it they would certainly die. <\/span><\/p>\n

They composed the following benediction:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our Father in heaven, behold it is evident and known to You that it is our
\ndesire to do Your will and to celebrate the festival of Passover by eating matza
\nand by observing the prohibition of leavened food. But our heart is pained
\nthat the enslavement prevents us and we are in danger of our lives. Behold
\nwe are prepared and ready to fulfill Your commandment: \u201c\u2018Live by them\u2019
\n[Lev. 18:5] \u2013 and do not die by them\u201d [Yoma 85b]. We pray to You to keep us
\nalive and preserve us and redeem us speedily so that we may observe Your
\nstatutes and do Your will and serve You with a perfect heart. Amen. (Critical
